Sweeping the dust and finding inspiration

I finally feel like it’s time to revive the blog and resume writing. As you might be able to tell, I’m really inspired by recent happenings in my coffee world – my close friend Matt Winton got the gold in Swedish barista championship (I learned a lot from him, and I’m still learning) and at the Swiss championships Emi Fukahori won the gold in Brewer’s cup and Mathieu Thieis won the gold in the Barista category. What makes these achievements feel even bigger is that the three of them work in the same spot – the specialty coffee shop Mame in Zurich. I’m absolutely stoked for them, amazing achievements.

Can Robusta taste any good?

The other week I had the chance to be assisting during a Q Graders course, not for Arabica, but for Robusta coffee. The Q coffee system measures and standardises quality for Specialty grade Arabica and for Fine Robusta coffees.  The Robusta programme designed from the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) and the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) exists from 2010 and by far there are around 185 Robusta graders around the world. The course was held at Bernhard Rothfos Intercafé in Zug Switzerland with instructor Clare Rwakatogoro. It was the first Q Robusta course held in Europe, needless to say – extremely interesting.

Today I went to Luzern to visit Kurt and Marc Haessig, owners of Haessig&Haessig coffee roastery in the town centre (Bruchstrasse 44).
